Jeremy stated it was a great pleasure to visit Horsham Museum on Saturday. There are some fascinating current exhibitions but it was a particular pleasure to take up Jeremy Knight’s kind invitation to see the presentation made to Lord Winterton on his stepping down as the Conservative candidate for Horsham, after nearly 50 years service as MP, in 1951.
The handing over of the inscribed book and Winterton’s speech was filmed by Pathe at the time. It is a fascinating piece of local history which the Museum has down well to track down.
The presentation is beautifully illustrated with local scenes and events from his very varied life (which included wartime service in the Imperial Camel Corps through which he knew “Lawrence of Arabia”). Also inscribed are the names of over 8,000 members and supporters of the Horsham Conservative association: quite a target to aim for!
