2022 saw the launch of the exciting new Weald to Waves initiative spearheaded by several large landowners including the Knepp Estate together with Horsham District Council, and the Sussex Wildlife Trust to safeguard the most valuable areas for nature and potential wildlife migration routes, highlighting sensitive and important areas on which to focus restoration efforts and protect vulnerable areas.
The Knepp Estate, at the heart of the Nature Recovery Network developed by Wilder Horsham District, has demonstrated how nature can bounce back if given the chance, even on degraded land. The aim is to do this in a strategic way, creating new habitat and reconnecting isolated islands of nature so that wildlife populations can move freely through the landscape again, responding to climate change and other pressures.
